Dr. Ernest Moniz Explains The Iran Deal

IS THIS DEAL A DONE DEAL? WILL THIS DEAL GO THROUGH? IS THERE ANY WAY THE OPPONENTS
OF THE DEAL CAN STOP IT AT THIS POINT?>>NO, THE DEAL IS GOING
THROUGH, AND FRANKLY I THINK IT WILL STOP IRAN FOR HAVING A
NUCLEAR WEAPON.>>Stephen: FOR HOW LONG WILL
IT STOP IRAN FROM HAVING A NUCLEAR WEAPON? BY THE WAY “STOPPING A NUCLEAR
WEAPON” GOT THREE PEOPLE CLAPPING. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
WHICH IS GREAT. IT MEANS WE’RE NOT THAT WORRIED
ABOUT IT. BUT HOW WILL IT STOP THEM? THE BASIC STRUCTURE, STEPHEN, IS
THAT WE HAVE ROLLED BACK THE NUCLEAR PROGRAM VERY
DRAMATICALLY FOR 15 YEARS. BUT WE HAVE PUT IN PLACE UNPRESS
DEPARTMENTED, LITERALLY IN THE HISTORY OF NONPROLIFERATION, NEW
VERIFICATION, INSPECTION MEASURES THAT WILL BE IN PLACE
FOREVER.>>Stephen: OKAY, BUT THEY,
THEY– MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THEY GET WARNED BEFORE YOU
INSPECT THEM, RIGHT? IT’S LIKE 22 DAYS, 23 DAYS,
SOMETHING LIKE THAT? IS IT LONGER THAN THAT?>>WELL, ACTUALLY —
>>IS IT LONGER THAN THAT?>>THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED THE
INITIAL PROTOCOL WHICH IN ITS ESSENCE MEANS IT’S THE KEY TOOL
FOR THE INSPECTION AGENCY TO GO TO SUSPICIOUS SITES, SHOULD
WHICHHAVE NOT BEEN ANNOUNCE GLD IF IT’S A SUSPICIOUS SITE, DO
YOU CALL THEM AHEAD OF TIME AND SAY, “WE’RE COMING, CLEAN IT
UP.”>>WE CALL THEM FIRST– WE DON’T
CALL THEM, THE AGENCY CALLS THEM AND SAYS, “WE WANT TO GO THERE
IN 24 HOURS. OF THE THE AGENCY DOES THAT FOR
ANY COUNTRY TODAY. THE TROUBLE IS FOR MOST
COUNTRIES, FOR ALL COUNTRIES NOW, EXCEPT IRAN, THERE IS NO
TIME LIMIT. THEY CAN JUST ROLL IT OUT. HERE, WE HAVE NOW PUT IN AN
AGREEMENT THAT, THAT DISCUSSION WITH THE COUNTRY– IRAN– CAN
ONLY GO FOR TWO WEEKS. AND IF THEY HAVEN’T SOLVED IT IN
TWO WEEKS, THEN WE HAVE 10 DAYS TO PROVIDE ACCESS. SO IT’S THE FIRST TIME THERE IS
ACTUALLY THIS REQUIREMENT TO COOPERATE.>>Stephen: SO THEY CAN STALL
FOR TWO WEEKS, AND THEN TWO WEEKS AFTER THAT– AND THEN
AFTER TWO WEEKS–>>10.>>Stephen: YOU HAVE TO BE IN
BETWEEN 10 DAYS. SO IT’S 24 DAYS.>>24 TOTAL.>>Stephen: CAN’T THEY CLEAN
IT UP AND SAY, “SEE, THERE’S NOTHING HERE?”
>>THERE HAVE BEEN ILLUSIONS OF THROWING DRUGS DOWN THE TOILET. IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY WITH
NUCLEAR MATERIAL. ( LAUGHTER )
( APPLAUSE )( CHEERS )
>>Stephen: OKAY.
ALL RIGHT.>>FIRST OF ALL, WE ALREADY HAVE
A HISTORY OF CATCHING THIS AFTER SIX MONTHS, LET ALONE 24 DAYS. SECONDLY, WE’VE DONE EXPERIMENTS
IN OUR LABORATORIES, IT’S REALLY, REALLY HARD TO CLEAN UP
NUCLEAR PARTICLES.>>Stephen: BECAUSE OF THE
RADIATION?>>BECAUSE OF RADIATION AND
OTHER FACTORS.>>Stephen: LET’S GO WITH
RADIATION.>>LET’S TRY RADIATION. ( LAUGHTER ).>>Stephen: COULDN’T WE HAVE
JUST LET THE ISRAELIS BOMB THEIR PROGRAM INTO NOTHINGNESS?>>WELL, YOU KNOW, I SAT IN THE
SENATE– IT’S ALWAYS A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE. ( LAUGHTER )
BETWEEN THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT
CHIEF OF STAFF, AND THEY WERE ASKED THIS QUESTION ABOUT THE
MILITARY OPTION. AND THE ANSWER WAS, LOOK, IF WE
BOMB THEM, YEAH, WE CAN REALLY SET THEM BACK FOR TWO OR THREE
YEARS. WELL, THIS AGREEMENT SETS THEM
BACK FOR 15 YEARS. SO THE ARGUMENT AS TO WHY ONE
WOULD ATTACK A MILITARY OPTION WITH ALL KINDS OF UNINTENDED
CONSEQUENCES, VERSUS A DIPLOMATIC SOLUTION THAT HAS 15
YEARS AND IN ADDITION STRONG AND UNIQUE INSPECTION MEASURES
FOREVER, PRETTY OBVIOUS TO ME

  1. this guy actually admits (with a straight face) that iran gets a 24 day warning before the u.s. comes to inspect…the nerve of this guy!!!

  2. What just happened? I got actual news, in an actual news segment, on a comedy show, that was more informative than anything I've seen on this issue in the "real news" in over 2 YEARS.

I now understand the Iran Nuclear deal a little better, and now I understand why I should support it. I was not against it because I'm stupid, I was against it because the media is stupid and did not properly inform me of the relevant facts so I could form informed beliefs.

  3. It is kind of uncomfortable to see the Quaker Oats guy without his hat, it's almost as strange as the time I saw Hannah Montana without her wig on MTV.

  4. Watching this from the UK. I am in awe of the wide range of quality of guest SC brings on. He is killing it! Keep it up.

  5. If this guy have the audacity and take the decision to carry this hairstyle . And then he has the life of humanity in his hands …….mmmm well I have to admit that I am I little bit concern . : O

  6. I really thought the Iran deal was a disaster until I saw this. Now I feel a lot better and I'm not afraid to admit i was wrong. Thanks Stephen Colbert! Excellent and extremely informative to citizens like myself! I wish more people who are against the deal like I once was would watch this segment!! Unfortunately I know insightful guests with extremely important information like this doesn't get a lot of views so im sure this will be a rare thing for the show, I mean just look at all the comments below… this guy discusses how he is literally solving a nuclear threat, and everyone seems to be too distracted by his hair… sad days.

  7. The doctor certainly sounds confident. Hopefully it's not arrogance. Hopefully this is a smart move. I'd be more comfortable if we could inspect Iran with ZERO notice. We can't treat them like other nations because they aren't like other nations, they have made genocidal claims. They need to earn trust.

  8. But we have to go to war! That's how those rich corporations make trillions off the military industrial complex! How else are Republicans supposed to pay back their donors? :/

  9. This was a fantastic interview! More cabinet members and public intellectuals please!

  10. People are so fucking ignorant that they're buying into this bullshit… Giving Iran tax payer money or "relief" as they call it and then allowing them to build a nuclear weapons… Tired of the liberal agenda being pushed on the susceptible minds of the ignorant masses… Read the actual deal, it will be reneged the second Liberals are out of the White House

  11. having nuke means nothing, no one dares to actually use it. it is like signing ur death certificate

  12. The Israelis were able to conceal their nuclear program in Dimona in the 1950s. The Iranians can do it too in 2015. It's not hard. It's not "flushing it down the toilet."
    This is just propaganda.

  13. seems possible we're drawing a Real line in the Real sand with this..I bet we wind up hitting them when they don't comply..POSSIBLY

  14. I love his hair. GOP candidates should sport that style considering they think they're the ones who stand up most for the Constitution and this country's values. It would look great on Donald Trump!

  15. bruh they will have a nuclear program no matter how well of a deal, treaty or disagreement.

  16. It's not pronounced I – ran. it's E-ron. At least Stephen knows that, unlike Ben Franklin.

  17. Ernest Moniz looks like my grandma, but he speaks the truth. Republicans need to start taking their advice from experts and history, instead of trusting their gut instincts. That poorly written letter initiated by Tom Cotton was one of the most embarrassing things I have seen in a while.

  18. Bravo to Colbert for giving Moniz some publicity, a man who played a big role in the nuclear deal his clear and measured plan, as well as his diplomatic relations with Ali Akbar Salehi (Iran's Energy Minister).

  19. Iran never looked for a nuclear weapon. And I wouldn't bother if they did. Least aggressive country in the region and maybe the world (yes you heard me).

  20. "Couldn't we just let the Israelis bomb their program?" The answer should have been: "Yes, if you want Israel to be wiped away from the earth as a consequence."

  21. Now that is taken care of we should concentrate on stopping the US`s plans to place 20 nuclear warheads in Germany.

  22. Good section – I just wonder when the US might open its nuclear arsenal for international inspection. Also Iran's desire for a nuclear weapon is well explained from a defensive standpoint in this section.

  23. so US can have nukes, while Iran cant? I suppose this agency that inspects is American? wtf?

  24. Iran gets to have its own inspectors after 24 days that's the problem. I mean come on that's like students grading there own papers

  25. why is you Europeans always want war, yeah bomb them, it will be a big mistake, go inspect Israel.

  26. wish Stephen would've asked about the unintended consequences of freeing up 150 billion dollars to the biggest state sponsor of terrorism…just a thought .

  27. "They were asked this question about the military option… And the answer was, look, if we bomb them we set them back for 2 or 3 years and, well, this agreement sets them back for 15 years." Yeah, and the minor detail that bombing Iran would be an act of aggression, that is, a class-A war crime.

  28. I'm confused. Late Night airs on CBS which is controlled by Zionist LUNATIC-CEO Lesley Moonves. So HOW is Colbert being ALLOWED to sell the Iran Nuclear Deal as a good idea on a Zionist Controlled Broadcasting Network? WTF? Can ANYONE explain this?

  29. the question is will the people of iran get any of this money to improve their lives?

  30. His first name and likeness towards a particular founding father (minus glasses) suggests this man has an emphatic grasp of this topic. In short, I trust him.

  31. The real reason we don't want the military option is because we'd run a real risk of starting WW3. The reason for this deal is ht the very last thing anyone wants including Iran iis for Iran to war with Israel. Htier threats toward Israel are merely political rhetoric.
It's what Iranians want to hear. If it was in anyway a good idea they would have done in the 90's.
Israel doesn't want a war because by all rights Hezbollah give them license to flatten Lebanon and takeover the rest of palestine.
We all know that a full scale war in the middle east would end in a global conflict. This has made the threat of war is so terrifying that it's a political WMD in its own right.

  32. this guest knows no more about the outcome of this than the pope, and he doesnt know shit about it.

  33. @Mark Marsh There's two factions at war. The old world order and new world order. Colbert is a good mason.

  34. This guy has a "Mycroft Holmes" sort of vibe. I'm glad there is at least one person like him in a place of high power in the US government.

  35. He doesn't say it's unethical to bomb Iran, but that it's inefficient. Maybe this kind of pragmatism has a place, but citizens should be wary of it, since it tends to directly attack legitimate humanist principles. The same realpolitik guided Germany through the wars, Kissenger in Southeast Asia and the Bush family in the Gulf. It's the right principle if you want to live like a machine.

  36. i gotta say, GREAT mix of guests, from actors , dancers, musicians, to politicians, writers etc . with such a variety of subjects and opinions both serious and wacky. and what GREAT music too, always fine selections, even including classical music . this is shaping up to be a wonderful show.

  37. It doesn't matter whether or not Democrats or Republicans think its a good, binding deal that will be a success. Iran is the party that determines whether it works or doesn't, and they violated it already with their missile test. If they are going to treat it as a joke to see what they can get away with, you have to at least be strict early on to set a precedent… But no, the white house just let them get away with it and didn't even consider a clear violation before the ink was even dry yet.

I don't buy that this administration can detect wrongdoing in secret when Iran can literally broadcast on live TV them violating the deal and come away without even a slap on the wrist. The deal is similar to the North Korea though not the same, and it is being handled even worse. They aren't set back 15 years at all, if anything they are being paid to misbehave.

  38. Stephen Cobert seems like the most objective talk show host that ever was. Anyone agree?

  39. A military intervention will set them back 2 to 3 years…looks like Iraq didn't get the memo. Their goverment has been set back waaaayy more than 2 years.

  40. How come none of this happens with the only actual country to have nuclear weapons Israel. Its one law for one and a different law for others. Iran hasn't attacked anyone in hundreds of years but it has had to defend itself from Saddam Hussein's Iraq when with the US's blessing and armed with US weaponry it attacked Iran. On top of that Iran once was a true democracy that had elected a moderate leader Mohammad Mosaddegh, but the US helped overthrow him in a CIA backed military coup and helped install the brutal dictator the Shah and they wonder why Iranians distrust America. Add that to America's slavish devotion to Israel regardless of anything it does, there's no international crime that the US wont defend, including military occupation, collective punishment, mass murder, segregation and so on. One day it will be clear to even those who don't know much about the occupied territories that the US supports an apartheid state.

  41. Who will stop USA and Israel to have nuclear weapon ?
Stephen Colbert unfortunately you are really naive

  42. Not to sound too partisan, but I have some serious concerns with Trump's judgment. I mean- this Energy Secretary, who was appointed by Obama, is a Nuclear Physicist. His replacement, Rick Perry, on the other hand, has a bachelor's in livestock studies.

Why isn't the political right seeing this type of disparity now? Is partisan pride really so important, that you would risk having some uninformed cowboy in charge of how a global superpower disposes of its nuclear waste?

The right was once based on an alignment between limited-regulation economic policy and a traditional value system; now it has become refuge to the intolerant, obstinate, misinformed, and hostile. The new right is where the angry now go to promote their irrationalities and echo-chamber their fears. There's no theory to this sort of negligence- we are just watching as the mob destroys progress like a frustrated child would. Shameful.

This is what you get when "democracy" gets emotional, and then doesn't vote for science.

  43. While I am supportive of the nuclear deal, the claim that they will be able to inspect iranian facilities forever is false. the time frame is almost two decades.

  44. I'm sure glad this bozo with a doctorate in theoretical physics is getting replaced by Rick Perry, who is so overly qualified he couldn't even be bothered with getting good grades in the three University science courses he took or even remember the name of the agency he once advocated for dismantling and is now being asked to run.

  45. From the greatest MIT genius to the biggest Texas shitkicker for energy secretary. What have we done?

  46. Javier Bardem look alike from "No Man for Old Country". Creepy as fuck.

  47. why can the US have a nuclear weapon but another country cant? and who does US think it is to tell any country what to do?

  48. "let isreahellis bomb their program?" Even syria just downed the most advanced Fighter jet . LOL

  49. Today Trump listened to his adviser on Nuclear Proliferation (himself) and canned the Iran Deal. I'm close to NY so i have a front row seat!

  50. Good. But there is a question: why nobody don't talk about the U.S nuclear and chemical weapons?

  51. Iranians in defiance of a mad US President's imposition of sanctions order have the right of enrichment of uranium and making of atomic weapons. Christian west failed to save 2015 nuclear deal. Tit for tat.

  52. The Colbert Report and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert are the best fake news shows ever.
